William J. Gillis of Walpole passed peacefully on October 13, 2025 surrounded by his loving family at the age of 87. Beloved husband of Mary L. Gillis (Speed) of 60 years. Devoted father of Lisa Larsen and her husband Peter of Northboro, Dawn Fruci and her husband Frank of Norwood, and Chrissy Crawford of North Attleboro. Cherished brother of Albert Gillis and his wife Donna of Roslindale, and the late John Gillis, Stephen Gillis, Carol Ludwig, and Margaret Danovich. Loving "Pup" of Matthew, Nate, Nicholas, Noah, Grace, Talia, Lia, and Frankie. Also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, in laws, and friends.
A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Bill was a man of quiet strength, endless dedication, and timeless charm. He especially cherished the many years vacationing in Naples, Florida with his beloved wife, Mary, where they created countless memories together in the sunshine and sea breeze. A true craftsman at heart, Bill found great joy in woodworking—most notably in building beautiful Adirondack chairs based on his father’s original design, a legacy of hands-on tradition he proudly carried forward. His love of antique cars and gardening brought him joy and peace, and his yard—always immaculate—stood as a testament to the pride he took in caring for what he loved. Bill was a lifelong fan of the Boston Red Sox, never missing a game and always having it loud enough in the house for everyone to hear. He was equally passionate about good food, especially Italian cuisine, his nightly desserts and the occasional glass of red wine. He had a special bond with his grandchildren, attending every game, recital, or event with unwavering support and pride. Sharing the magic of books—especially Harry Potter—with them was one of his greatest joys. Above all, Bill will be remembered for his deep devotion to family, his steady presence, and the love he poured into every part of his life. He leaves behind a legacy of warmth, his strong Catholic faith, and heartfelt memories that will live on in those who were fortunate enough to know him.
