Owen F. Devlin, affectionately known as Owen to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on August 27, 2024, at the VA Hospital in West Roxbury, with his loving wife by his side. Born on March 9, 1940, in the vibrant city of Boston, Owen was a man whose life was marked by love, service, and dedication.
Owen's journey began as a bright student at Boston College High School, where he graduated in 1957. His academic prowess led him to Boston College, where he distinguished himself as a Military Graduate of ROTC in 1961. His commitment to his country was unwavering, as he served in the Army with honor and distinction for over a decade. Owen's time in the military took him abroad to Germany and within the United States to Oklahoma and Texas. He taught ROTC at Southwest Missouri State College and bravely served in Vietnam, where his courage and leadership earned him a Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal, Air Medal, and numerous other commendations and awards.
After his active duty, Owen transitioned into civilian life as a Business Systems Analyst for CSC, where he dedicated over 30 years of service. His work was not just a job but a passion, and his travels for work were interwoven with cherished family memories, including a highlight vacation in Maui for two weeks in 1989.
Owen's personal life was rich and full. In 1963, he married the love of his life, Virginia (Jones), and they shared 61 years of Loyal and Loving partnership. Together, they welcomed their first child just a year into their marriage. Owen was a devoted father to Paula St. Pierre and her husband Michael of Sharon, Douglas Devlin and his wife Stacy of San Diego, Dennis Devlin and his wife Christine of Mendon, and Patricia Pharo and her husband Eric of New Hampshire. He was a beloved brother to Roberta Devlin of Hull, Mary Corbett of Texas, and predeceased by Robert and Doreen Devlin.
Owen's legacy as a loving "Papa" lives on through his grandchildren, Suzanne Hall, Delenn Devlin, and Erin Devlin. His extended family, including many loving nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends, will remember him for his kindness and warmth.
Music and family games were among Owen's treasured interests. His voice resonated within the choir at Our Lady of Sorrows, and his competitive spirit came alive during family games of Michigan Rummy and other board games. Owen delighted in taking his family on excursions, from the majestic Niagara Falls to the educational Museum of Science during school vacations. Although he was not one for the beach, his love for his children would find him enjoying their joy at the seaside.
Owen was a man of many virtues. Loving, kind, and courageous are words that only begin to scratch the surface of describing a man of such character. His life was a testament to the power of commitment—commitment to his country, his work, and, most importantly, his family.
The loss of Owen F. Devlin leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him, but his spirit and the values he stood for will continue to inspire and guide us. As we bid farewell to Owen, we celebrate a life well-lived, a life that exemplified the best of what it means to be a husband, a father, a soldier, and a friend. He will be profoundly missed, but his memory will forever be etched in the annals of our family and the history of those lives he touched so deeply.
