With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Lynette Gwen (Sorby) McMillan on Sunday, April 19, 2026, at the age of 77, who passed away peacefully in her home in Walpole, MA. She was defined by her actions, love of family and friends, passion for travel and experiences, and was the most generous, thoughtful, and kind-hearted person who always thought of others first. She had a great sense of humor and loved telling funny stories with hilarious, great detail that made anyone around her laugh for hours.
She was the loving daughter of the late Marjorie (Beers) Sorby and Lawrence Sorby. Lynette was married to the love of her life for 49 years, Richard (Cy) McMillan, who preceded her in death. Beloved sister of Laurel Sorby (the late Al Colvin), cherished mother of Brooke McMillan (Jimmy Gallivan), of Walpole, MA, and Skye (McMillan) Bergan (husband Jim), of Franklin, MA. Lynette’s most cherished role was “Mimi” to her five grandchildren: Julia and Lillian Bergan, and Jack, Maran, and Charlotte Gallivan. Treasured cousin of the Beers and Van Buskirk families. Her commitment to friendships often transcended into something deeper and instead became family.
Lynette was born in Boston on February 5, 1949, and lived in Hyde Park and Dedham, graduating from Dedham High School in 1966. She attended Chandler School in Boston, and later went back to college and received her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in teaching. Lynette taught third grade in the Boston Public Schools at the Warren Prescott School in Charlestown for many years. As an educator, Lynette had a deep love and commitment to her students, and truly loved going to work every day, making lifelong friendships with her fellow teachers and paras.
Lynette and Cy loved being at their cottage in New Silver Beach Association in North Falmouth, where they shared that love with their children and grandchildren. They enjoyed sitting on the porch, watching people walk and jog by, loved talking with their friends, and watching their grandchildren and their friends play in the yard, or ride their bikes. They rode a Harley-Davidson motorcycle with their friends, loved hopping on for a leisurely local drive, and had many great trips to Bike Week in Laconia and to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota. Lynette loved traveling to new and exciting places, often reminiscing on her travels as a young woman exploring Europe, but felt most at home in Scotland.
She was the epitome of kindness, empathy, compassion, and a role model for others to live by.
