Joseph James Froio, affectionately known as Joe to his friends and family, passed away peacefully in his Norwood, MA home on September 28, 2024, surrounded by the love and warmth of his family. Born on September 18, 1948, in Boston, MA, Joe's life was a tapestry of dedication, service, and joy that touched many hearts.
Joe's journey began as the beloved son of the late Joseph and Rita Froio. His early years in Boston laid the foundation for a life characterized by strength and determination. Joe's legacy continued to grow as he found love and companionship with his devoted wife of over 26 years, Janice (Bethoney) Kaplan. Together, they built a life filled with laughter, adventure, and unwavering support for one another.
A proud father, Joe's legacy will live on through his children, Jeffrey Froio of New York, Karen Froio of Abington, and Laura Micele and her husband James of Abington. His role as "Grand Pa Joe" to Vinnie, Dominic, Kaitlyn and her husband Brian, Gino, Angelo, Giovanni, Joey Marie, Joey, and great-grandfather to Armani, was one he cherished deeply. His love for his grandchildren knew no bounds, and he reveled in their accomplishments and milestones.
Joe's familial bonds extended to his cherished relationships with his aunts and uncles, particularly his close ties to Salvatore Froio and his wife Anna, John Froio and his wife Debbie, as well as his fond memories of the late Frank Froio and the late Rose Froio, with Kathy Froio holding a special place in his heart. The Froio family's connection was a testament to their collective strength and love.
Beyond his family, Joe's lifelong friendship with Fred DeCoste and his wife Terri, and Steven Gerard and his wife Janet, stood as a testament to the loyalty and camaraderie he inspired. His nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends will remember him as a man who brought laughter, support, and a zest for life to every gathering.
Joe's professional life was marked by over 40 years as a skilled Tile Installer, operating his own company, Froio Tile. His craftsmanship and artistry left a lasting impression in homes and businesses across the region. A proud US Army Veteran, Joe served his country with honor in Vietnam. His strong-willed nature was evident in both his military service and his business endeavors, often asserting that it was "his way or the highway" – a testament to his passionate spirit.
An avid adventurer, Joe's love for travel took him to the sandy beaches of Hawaii, the vibrant shores of Cozumel, and the crystal waters of the Caribbean. He cherished his cruises and was known for his affinity for gambling and playing blackjack at Foxwoods, Lincoln, Atlantic City, and Las Vegas. His adventurous spirit extended to the open road, where he rode his beloved Harley Davidsons alongside his friends.
Joe's daredevil streak was unmatched, as he embraced life with open arms, whether jet skiing, snowmobiling, or cruising in cars and bikes. His younger years were filled with lively entertainment, and as time went on, his focus shifted to the joy of his family. "Grampa Joe" was a constant presence at sporting events, cheering on from the sidelines with pride and enthusiasm. A fan of the Patriots and an occasional follower of baseball, Joe enjoyed the thrill of the game.
To describe Joe is to speak of love, kindness, and passion. He embodied these qualities in every aspect of his life, from the love he poured into his family to the dedication he showed in his work and service. Joe's presence was a gift to all who knew him, and his memory will be cherished and celebrated by those he leaves behind.
Joseph James Froio's life was a journey of love, laughter, and a fierce commitment to living fully. He will be deeply missed, but the echoes of his vibrant life will resonate for generations to come.
Visiting hours will be held Thursday morning from 9:30-12:00 at the Alexander F. Thomas and Sons Funeral Home 45 Common Street Walpole. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated following the wake on Thursday at 12:30 PM at St Catherine of Siena Church Norwood. Interment at Brookdale Cemetery Dedham, relatives and friends invited.
