Eugene Gilmore of Walpole passed peacefully in his home, surrounded by his loving family at the age of 81. Son of the late James and Inez (Sarti) Gilmore. Beloved husband of 55 years of the late Linda (Byers). Devoted father of Hannah Fichandler and her husband, Kristopher, of Fairfield, CT, and Brian Gilmore and his wife, Jennifer Horner, of Los Angeles, CA. Loving “Grandpa” of Summer and Cooper Fichandler, and also survived by his cousin, Frederick Regan, his wife, Ellen Spencer, and their children, Tess and Juliet.
Brockton-born, Boston University educated, Gene was a partner, creative director, and copywriter at Boston and Providence’s top ad agencies in addition to his own company over his 49-year career. Gene loved professional bike racing and was an avid cyclist himself, riding until last spring. He was a huge car enthusiast—classic and new—owning 36 of them over his lifetime. He loved driving and taking rides around New England with his wife. Gene was a 54-year resident of Walpole, and enjoyed supporting the communities he was part of whether it be coordinating a bike race, organizing a car show, or helping found Walpole’s high school lacrosse team with his son. In retirement, he loved meeting up with his friends at McDonald’s every morning and gathering again in the afternoons at Briggs Nursery. A special thank you to VNACare’s hospice team and home care providers for their excellent care in his final days.
Visiting hours and service will be held Saturday, February 3, from 10 am–12 pm at the Alexander F. Thomas and Sons Funeral Home, 45 Common Street, Walpole. Relatives and friends are invited. Interment will be private at the family’s request.
